USB to Micro USB wiring pinout

I have a USB credit card reader that has a normal USB connector designed to hook up to a PC.  I am trying to attach this to a Motorola Xyborg tablet.  I purchased a USB to Micro USB cable like this one:

When I use that to connect the credit card reader to the tablet it works.

Next I cut the USB male plug off of the CC reader and cut the female USB connector off the adapter cable and spliced them together.  There were 4 wires in each, red, white, green and black.  I spliced them together putting the same color with the same color.

When I tried connecting the CC reader with its' new micro USB connector to the tablet it gets power but it does not work.  There is an LED light on the reader which is supposed to be green, when I connect it this way the LED is red.

From what I gather, I probably have the pinout wrong.  What do I need to do to make this work?

It's about 1/3 down the page under Physical Appearance.  I'm guessing the color wires your cables used weren't used the same way.  Good thing the power wires were.

So it looks like micro has an extra pin which needs to be connected to ground.  There are only four wires coming off the micro male connector though, so I'm not sure how to do that.

If you'll notice there are 4 wires that do the same thing on both connectors.  The 5th wire is a signal that you aren't using so you'll just leave it disconnected.  It tells some special cables which direction they are plugged in.

I'm not getting it then.  The four wires that have the same function all appear to be connected to each other.  Tomorrow I'll trace them out with a multimeter to see where the mixup is.

Ignore my last post.  I forgot how you were using the cable.  The extra wire according to wiki should be connected to signal ground which is D-.  Are you sure your device is capable of what you are doing?

Yes, it worked when I connected it using the USB type A male to micro USB male adapter cable.  I just don't want the adapter plus 6 feet of cable on the card reader because folks will be carrying this around.

It's been awhile since I did this, but if I remember correctly, you need to connect the "foil shieldings" together, also. I think it carries the "ground".
You don't need to worry about making them a shield, just 'twisting' them together should be good enough.

I initially thought that the sheathing might be a problem, because I did verify that it's connected to the "shield" on the USB type A male connector, but there is no sheathing in the micro USB adapter.

What I ended up doing is checking the pinouts with a multimeter and I found out that the USB to micro USB adapter was flipping the red and white wires, so I did that and everything works now.
