Hi Team,

We have an SBS 2008 server with a self signed cert. I'm ok with renewing it on the server, but they have about 30 laptops scattered around the country. Will all these require a fresh copy of the new cert, or will they see it's self signed and keep chugging along (dreaming I think)....

That really depends on which certificate is expiring. If it is the leaf certificate then you need do nothing. The root certificate will still be trusted and the new lead will "just work."

If the root certificate is expiring then you must distribute a new one.

SBS self issued certs have the following expiration dates:

Leaf certs: every 2 years
Root certs: every 5 years

For what it's worth, I don't do self-issued certs at all anymore. You can buy a trusted cert for $10, and unless you charge a ridiculously low rate/low salary, it probably cost you more to write the question and read the response in time than it would've to just purchase a certificate.
