The steps I took here:

1) Uninstall Google Sync and reboot.
2) Delete my main Google calendar.
3) I had close to 4000 appointments in Outlook, going back to 2001.  I deleted all past appointments, leaving me with about 50 future appointments in 2009.  Instructions to make this relatively easy are in the Google Sync Troubleshooting area.
4) Run the cleanup and repair utility on the Outlook PST.
5) Reinstall Sync, set for two way.

Sync has been running for me trouble free for about 5 weeks.

I just deleted the folder in the user's program data folder and then un-installed and re-installed the "Google Calendar Sync" and it works fine now.

It is not exactly the solution that was offered and my variation worked.
