Turning on the Exchange Writer

Hey All,

I have just put Symantec Backup Exec 2012 System Recovery onto a Windows 2003 Server with Exchange.

The backup failed last night because Exchange Writer is disabled.

Here are the steps i have found to enable it... does this look correct?

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

Locate and then double-click the following registry subkey:

Double-click the Disable Exchange Writer value.

In the Value data text box, change the value from 1 to 0, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.

Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

Stop and then restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.

I am always worried about making registry changes! I believe doing this change will stop NTBackup from backing up exchange? (Im going to turn off NTBackup once Backup Exec is working anyway)

I just need some re-assurance really that this will be ok to carry out :)

Thank You!

Hi phoenix81,

your steps are correct.  Go ahead.

Refer http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH187865

Recommendation: - always keep in mind...for successful exchange backup,
- Create separate backup job for "Exchange Backup".
- Exchange writer should be enabled
- Need exchange writer and others writers also on stable state
- Unchecked AOFO option
- Select GRT for individual mails folder restoration.
You have mentioned excat steps......do it....no issue......after making changes just restart the microsoft exchange information stor services......try to perform this steps in maintenance time frame....

Also after enabling the writer....when u can configuring backup job in backup exec for exhcange resource, remember that AOFO option should be unchecked......it is recommended by symantec to not to use AOFO option for exchange, sql, sharepoint.......

cheers :)
