Trying to force paragraph to upper left in css

I have an image that sits in the upper right corner of a div. I have a paragraph that I want to sit in the upper left corner. For some reason, it remains beneath the image. Width should not really be an issue here as I am pretty certain I have alotted ample room for both elements to sit side by side more or less. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

       <div style="width:100%">
        <img alt="Drive Safe Work Week" src="\App_Themes\Default\Images\dsww-logo_40.jpg" style="float:right" />

<p style="text-align:left;width:550px;float:left">This the paragraph iam trying to force to the upeer left corner of my div.</p>

    Don't actually need a span but left it there in case you need to do formatting on the text
