CD-ROM stops working

I have multiple Dell Optiplex 780 desktop computers that have their CD/DVD roms stop working after putting in and removing two cd's.  I will place one cd in, it works fine, remove it, place a second one in, it works fine, remove it and then the third cd does not respond at all and freezes windows explorer.  All cd's added after that do the same thing.  It is very consistent and always does it after two cd's have been placed and removed.

In the device manager it says the drive is "Working Properly".  Using Windows 7 x64, we have multiple computers with more than one type of CD/DVD rom showing the same symptoms.  I have removed the drive from Device Manager and added it back but the issue persists.

Any ideas?  Thanks!

Update firmware and drivers would be my first step.

Is it the same 2 cds or ANY 2 cds?

Have you tried contacting dell?

This may soung strange, but some Adobe updates were screwing with some of my CD ROMS.

marine:   Thanks.  I am on the latest firmware, have all windows updates installed and have updated the firmware of the cd/dvd rom drive.

ged325: From what I can tell it is any 2 cd's.  I have not contacted dell yet.  

Paulfarmer:  Adobe Flash player and Adobe reader are both up to date.  I am going to try uninstalling them to see if it helps.

I'm pretty sure it was a flash player update.  They were older XP machines, but all Dell Optiplex.
Try cleaning the CD/DVD rom drive with a cd cleaner. you can also try replaceing the cd rom drive with another one, there only like 15 bucks on www.newegg.com. There is also a little eye reader in side the cd rom drive try cleaning with a glasses cloth.....
did you try this fixit yet ?

also - did you consider malware?  run an updated AV scan, and MBAM after that
is that all Dell Optiplex 780 ?? or just some ?? If just some, try remove the DVD room from the one that got problem and swap to the good Dell Optiplex 780 then test and see.

Hey all - I ended up resolving this.  The version of the Intel Matrix Storage manager that was on the machines was not working properly.  I went back to a previous version (v8.9.1.1023) and that resolved the issue.

I was able to resolve this on my own.  Unfortunately the answers provided did not lead me in this direction so I am not selecting any as a solution.
