I have purchased 2 new DL380G7 Servers without drives. I want to deploy ESXi on both servers so I can deploy Vmotion. What are your recommendations for the number of drives in each server, the prefered raid arra for the server drives, and the appropriate drive size. I'm considering 300Gig drives. Second question, what is your recomendation for a storage system, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NAS? Thank you.

as you have a server which supports installation of ESXi to USB or SD card I would recommend you install ESXi on USB flash drive or SD card, and then use the local storage as datastores for VMs.

if you purchase without drives, just install on USB/SD card, and save your money for disks in the SAN/shared storage. There is no reason to waste money on drives to install the OS.

Here is the VMware KB on installing 4.1 on USB/SD:

Here is the VMware KB on installing 5.0 on USB/SD:

You will need shared storage for vMotion, and at least Essentials Plus license.

What budget do you have for shared storage, Fibre Channel being most expensive, iSCSI and NAS (NFS) much cheaper options.

Or you could use a Virtual Appliance, VMware VSA, HP Lefthand VSA, SvSAN, and install on the storage on your two servers, to create Clustered Storage.
