Thoretically it should be 128 although it appears 32 seem to be the working upper limit

OK, theory says 128, in some forums they say in fact is it 32. I had to give a try :)
I tried to login with 127, 128 and 150 characters long password (win 7 x64 Ent) with results:
127 chars pswd - OK
128 chars pwsd - FAILED
150 chars pwsd - FAILED

PS: pls do not ask me to try this again

as I wrote, I had to because better once to try than 10 times to hear (and not to be sure if it is really true, like this time :D).
So it was just information for readers I won´t repeat this :D

I tried it too  using the command line on win7x64 ultimate.
256 ok
257 fail

So the answer for ultimate at least is 256.
Simply use the command
net user someuser 12345678123456781234567812345678123456781234567812345678123456781234567812345678123456781234567812345678123456781234567812345678123456781234567812345678123456781234567812345678123456781234567812345678123456781234567812345678123456781234567812345678123456781
This will fail. Now try again and erase the last Digit ("1") - will succeed.

Hi McKnife,
as I know net user command to create and modify user accounts on computers. It is not a problmem to create user account with long long password (I did it succesfully with 250 characters), but it is problem to log into win with password longer as 127 characters (based on my test you can see above). So it it no problem to create account with pass about 130 characters but it is problem to log in with this account
So we can say 256 is max lenght to set pass, 127 for to be able to log in :)

Hi helpfinder.

You are correct, at least as I could verify using vista business, 127 chars can be typed to the logon screen. So for interactive logons, 127 is limit. But for non-interactive logons (think of accounts used for scheduled tasks, for example), the limit is 256. To verify, create a scheduled task using schtasks.exe. If we use the GUI - again, 128 is the limit. Using the command line it's 256 and therefore, there are at least ways to really use 256 chars.

...and therefore 256 should be the answer ;) IF however you would really like to use that account for interactive logons, it's 128 (but who would really type 128 chars?).
