What version of .net do I need in order to get a desktop XP to do automatic updates?

New XP install.

What version of .net do I need to proceed.

Done this 100s of times on diferent pcs but I cant get it on this one.

Im thinking its .net related

None.. it is not .net related.

Xp fresh install sp3
It's on auto updated.
I have used the get up date command now from run.  Can't recall the exact code now I'm not beside pc.

If you want more than high priority updates then you have to go to 'windows update' / 'microsoft update' and select 'optional updates'

Is this the command you think you used previously from the Start Menu's "Run" field?:
%SystemRoot%\system32\wupdmgr.exe
If so, that should just start Internet Explorer and resolve to:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
or
http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
(depending on whether you are set to use "Windows Update" or "Microsoft Update", as shown in ve3ofa's screenshot above.
