DNS Backup

Hi dudes,
Iam looking for a script capable of making backup of my DNS

DNS is fully capable of populating dynamically and it's very fixable when a problem exists. On a couple occasions, I wiped out DNS and allowed it to repopulate itself without any backup. So, if your server tanks, the resource records will repopulate on a new server or nuked and re-installed server.

If you have more than one DNS server (clustered), then you have no real reason or need to backup DNS. It's unlikely both servers will tank at the same time. Bringing the bad server back on line will allow it to replciate DNS between servers. So, you already have a backup with more than one server.

Bottom line: Consider a backup strategy that includes a full system state (image) backup of the domain controller if it's single and don't waste time on DNS data by itself.

Just only to extend Darius answer.

If this is Active Directory environment you can simply use:
1) System State backup for AD-Integrated DNS zones
2) In case that you have standard primary/secondary zones, just copy zone file(s) from
%WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\DNS folder to another place or do also system state backup

Krzysztof

the script provided by u replaced/changed all files on system32 directory...meaning my server is no longer booting up

@mabote,

I have used that script multiple times I have never had that happened and there is no logic within the script to do this. Not sure why system32 was overwritten or changed.

Thank you
Dariusg

After running the script my DNS configuration, DHCP, AD and everything under administrative tools was gone...only shortcuts!
After trying to restart the server it did not load the OS..it is in a loop! We had to send it to repair...i have tried making a system restore with no success...chkdsk /r

If a system repair didn't work, I believe you may be looking at a RAID or RAID driver failure, not a script failure (unless an SBS machine). Like Dariusg, I think there is a little more to this story.

Dariusg has given sound advice, and I trust his insight. If he says the script works, I must have been tested and worked for him. He is not malicious in character.

If we can work with you to get you back on line, we will. You have our undivided attention. What can be done to help you get back on line?
