Exchange 2010 autodiscovery settings problem

Hello

Having an issue with client PCs running Win7 / Outlook 2010 not being able to to the Exchange 2010 server.

As far as I can tell the Exchange 2010 is up and running - no obvious error reported in the logs. BPA ok - everything look pristine. ActivSync client (Iphones) are connecting fine. OWA is also working.

I have run the autodiscovery test in Outlook 2010 and sure enough I see something erroneous right at the start of the diagnostic, where the first line reads (sorry MS wisely decided that copy / paste would not be useful in that context :( )

Attempting URL https://someserver (...) found through SCP

where said URL refers to an old DNS entry which is not anymore in use in the organization (was retired recently).

I have fired up the EMC and checked Client Access -> OWA / ECP / EAS / OAB settings and they all show correct entries and no trace of that old url.

I have tried to use

Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity myserver -AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri https://myserver.domain.local/Autodiscover/Autodiscover.xml

but it does not seem to help.

Where else should I go to get the right setting ?

Thanks in advance for any pointer !

Thanks - unless I am missing something I have to use the Set-ClientAccessServer commandlet (I hope I dont have to compile the C++ sample refered in linked articles...) ? Which I believe I just did...

That URL is being provided by AD within Exchange Configuration partition.

Help us by adding a screenshot here, for our reference and review, it shouldn't be that difficult to spot the error.

Sorry might be a little thick this morning - what screenshot are you requesting ?

If the URL being returned is an old server, then something is in the domain referencing that.
Have you checked for DNS entries that might be in use? SRV or autodiscover?
The change you have made is correct, and that should be published to the domain shortly after making the change. It could be poor replication.

Single server or multiple? If multiple the change needs to be made on all of them.

Another option would be to setup a split DNS system so that autodiscover.example.com resolves internally and then presuming that is on your SSL certificate, switch to that for the AutodiscoverServiceInternalURI.

run Test-outlookwebservices | fl command from eleviated exchange powershell window and check if it reports any errors, if it does then post those errors here.

Run EXBPA and check if it shows any releated errors.

Alexandre TakacsCTOAuthor Commented:
Ran all BPA checks (Health, Permissions, Connectivity and Baseline) and they all pass with flying colors except  (1) just a warning about my network driver being more than 2 years old and the swap file not optimal and (2) maybe more relevant some errors on the certs

2.1 the subject alternative name (SAN) of SSL certificate for https://exchange.mydomain.com/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync does not appear to match the host address. Host address: exchange.mydomain.com. Current SAN: DNS Name=*.mydomain.com, DNS Name=mydomain.com.

2.2 the cert name is for *.mydomain.com and internally we access myserver.domain.local which raises an error. Can I have different cert for the local and external zones ?

But I don't think this is the issue at hand as those warning where already present days ago when the user could actually connect to the server...

Simon Butler (Sembee)ConsultantCommented:
Do you have a wildcard certificate, rather than a UC certificate in place?
If so, that is going to cause you some problems because the internal name isn't on the certificate.
If you wanted to use the internal DNS zone as well, then you would need to have a UC certificate instead.

You need to setup a split DNS system so that the external names resolve internally, then modify Exchange to use the external names instead.

Thanks - was indeed a DNS issue - after a thorough cleanup / check / propagation things are working again. Not sure to understand what happened out of the blue but we are again up & working
