user alert when creating opportunity

I've wanted to get an alert showing when a user opens a new opportunity on an account with already existing open opportunities which has been made in a given timeframe. I'm not sure how to go about on this one.
I've been thinking about a field that counts open opportunities on an account, with given rules, like a view. Anyone got any hints/tips?

Not sure that I have the full answer but I would investigate using a form OnLoad event for opportunity.

Ensure that the javascript for the event tests whether the form is for a new record. If it is, then run a query on the CRM database to get a list of opportunities for the same potential customer with your data parameters. The query would use OData.

Then depending on the results, perhaps a count?, you decide whether to alert the user.

I'm not in a position to detail this any further but it may help direct your research.
