I've joined several computers to a SBS 2011 essentials domain and the backups were setup automatically on the server. What I didn't know was that these had to go to an internal drive on the server.

I plan on putting a 2TB drive in the server for the sole purpose of storing these backups, but can anyone tell me how the data is retained? Will it be overwritten automatically, or will it require management of space on my part? Are the backups a full backup nightly, or only changed items? Are versions kept?

There will only be 5 computers being backed up. Currently three computers were backed up and it took 180GB

ok, is see that in the settings under additional client computer backup tasks there are client computer backup retention policies.
By default daily backups for 5 days, weekly for 4 weeks, monthly for 6 months.

What is the difference in these backups? I'm trying to plan a backup scheme that will prevent my drive from filling to capacity.

Thanks

First, I want to direct you to the online help for SBS 2011 Essentials Administrators:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/backup-restore-overview-1

There you will find a great guide to help you create your own backup plan.

Second, you absolutely do NOT need to back up the workstations to an internal drive in the server.  Just be sure that whatever drive you use is listed on the official compatibility list:
