installing windows xp and it's asking for SP 3

Hi- Someone sent me a laptop with an interrupted windows installation. I put my cd in, but now it's asking for SP 3 cd. Pleae insert the Compact Disc labelled, "Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD" into your CD ROM drive and click OK.

I have SP3 on a USB drive, but not on a cd. Is there any way to get around this?

If you have only service pack 3 on USB. Then you need to integrate that SP3 into Windows XP CD.  You can do it by nlite software. Its free, you can search on google. after intgrating sp3 into windows xp then it will also make bootable disk of windows XP sp3. then you can boot from it.

The easiest way to do it, if you don't have a cd, is to simply download the SP3 iso file from Microsoft. Once downloaded, use any cd burning software, like imgburn, and burn (not copy) the iso image to the cd.

You now have a perfect SP3 install disc.

Hmmm... now I get: the file 'ams' on windows professional service pack 3 CD is needed

I tried this for NTFS and got nothing: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311755

I've tried to reboot, put the XP Cd back in at request, now I don't have a mouse to click OK with. :)

best restart the install from scratch
be sure to erase the partition when installing

Here's my problem- when I put the cd in, it tries to continue the installation that was there. Is there an easy way to get it to start from scratch? Thanks!

you set in the BIOS the boot order to cd first - then it will start from CD

you can also hook the drive to a working pc, and delete all files on this drive

Download and burn Darik's Boot and Nuke. Burn the iso to a cd, like you did with sp3, and boot the system with it. Make sure that CD is the first boot device in your BIOS. It will remove all trace of data on the hard drive, leaving a completely unformatted drive for you to install on.

Once it is completed, insert the XP install cd and boot the system. You can then create the partition and continue the install.

or download UBCD - many tools on there to erase partitions, or drives

Thanks all! I tried DBan and it wouldn't do anything from the cd drive even though it was first in the boot order. I'll try one of these. If they won't work, maybe something's wrong with the CD/DVD drive?

That can be; test with another CD - or test this CD on another PC to check if it is bootable
normal reasons for not reading cd :
-bad media, cable, or drive (swap or replace them to test)
-also bad ram can cause it

Make a clean MBR first, use a free edition of EASUS partition manager for formatting and partitioning its better to booth it in USB if you have USB ports. Then reinstall via USB if possible. Integrate SP2 and SP3 via nlite.

I have USB ports, but I don't see them in the boot order. How do you boot using USB? Thanks.

If USB isn't listed in the bios Boot Order, you probably can't.

Post the motherboard model, or type of system, and we can give a more definitive answer.

did you follow my suggestions to see what is happening with the cd drive yet ?

mel200Author Commented:
not yet, I'm giving myself a day off.  I'm not sure I can test with another cd, because I can't boot the laptop.

ok - i'll hear you later then

On your BIOS look for Boot tab and see the boot priority order if you find difficulty in booting a USB you may use USB DVD drive but if USB is not supported in BIOS you can also try the ubiquitos- LAN boot see: http://www.ccboot.com/lan-boot.htm

Hi, everyone- about testing the CD drive, I don't have a spare computer or a spare drive. or the know-how to swap them out, unfortunately.

I think to Make a clean MBR first, I need to get into a command prompt, and I can't do that unless there's a way to get into the command prompt from the BIOS?

I'm not sure where to find out what the motherboard model is, but the laptop is a Toshiba Tecra A3, and the hard disk is a FUJITSU MHV2060H-(PM).

If I can't fix it, it's not a huge tragedy, but I'm trying to get as many used laptops as possible fixed up to give to poor kids in my neighborhood. I'm just a little knowledgeable, but not a tech by any means, so let me know if you think this is beyond my skills. Thanks very much for your help, everyone.

It was the correct answer to the question. Now I have another problem, but that will have to be solved in another question. Thanks!
