generic server decommission process

I am in search of a generic server decommission process template that can be used for various OS platforms. I was in shock that one does not currently exist on the Internet when searching and was hoping someone had drafted one.

Basically, I would like some guidelines/steps to follow during the process of decommissioning a server within a corporate environment.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, i think there is no generic template cause all server are different depending in your environment.
- What is the role of that server?
- What services is it used for?
- Is it part of a server upgrade or just no longer in use?

with only the 3 question above, there is hundreds of scenarios to gracefully take down a server. Remember that the term server can be any type of computer, not only the server grade OS... a laptop on XP can be a server too (not ideal, but i have seen it).
