How to behave or things to be followed to be a successful team lead (technology lead) in IT

Hi Experts,

  I'm about to lead 5 members team in a development project. This role is new to me. I would like to know how to behave as a lead (I mean needed qualities or qualities to be improved ) or things to be followed to be a successful team lead (technology lead) in IT.

   I would like to hear from you such as how to interact with client and what are the things need to do on daily basis and so on.

  Please do share your thoughts. You could refer some eBooks / books / white papers/ articles as well.

    Dear friend,
    You should know few things, which apply general to any leader, does not matter if is IT or whatever:
    -      There are people born with leadership qualities. They attract people around them and lead them natural, without any preparation, school, advice. These guys are the best for such position.
    -      There are people who learn to become leaders – in schools, courses. Sometime a book is good, because you find info that you never heard before. But in this case the interaction with the people is where you test yourself.
     You may read or hear things, but that is not enough. The conflict between you and other team members is inevitable for many situations. We have to be prepare for that. But that is also not enough. There is more. You have to learn how to become a binder, a cement for others, how to bring them together without losing your top position.
    There are 2 main (opposite) methods to lead. Whichever is better (and here better equal to obtain results) depends by your personality:
    -      You can be authoritative, like in military, using your “force” – not beating people, but constrain them in different ways – so they are scared of you for different reasons. Many times people need to be pushed from back in order to give what is best from them. They will respect you when all as a team will obtain the results. Until then there is a big tension, but that is what may be fuel for working harder. Is important to know where is the limit for push and to know how to compensate any inequalities. You have to be a good diplomat.
    -      You may be friendly and the best in your team, a real model, example. And you may gain respect for what you do and what you are. Here you have to carefully, because it may be due to others personality to lose your position, credibility as a leader in front of the others. But people will always appreciate such personality more. Do not forget, important is the results, do not let yourself foolish by other and to do more work than others – you have to keep an eye on them and other results, that is your primary attribute.
    The best situation is when you are able to combine the above, but that require experience. The true hero, leaders during history had a bit all: born leaders, authoritative and in first line setting examples for others.
    No matter what your situation is now remember: you have to confident on you, start to learn individual each member of your team (at personal level also) and if you feel helpless find a course in your town about interactivity with people. If you do not find one specific for business then take simple like that: drive and dance.

    There are plenty of writings about "how to be a leader" or "how to become a leader".
    I guess is enough a search on Internet with the above words.
    But particularly for me is one book that had the biggest influence over me about leadership and the relation with people, to become a good appreciated leader, and that is the Bible.
