My first suggestion on a scanner/scanning problem is to install the latest-and-greatest drivers (usually TWAIN and WIA, sometimes ISIS) from the scanner manufacturer's website. You didn't say if your W7 is 32-bit or 64-bit, so here are links to both for the HP Scanjet 5590:

W7/32-bit
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=377691&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=377689&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4062

W7/64-bit
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=377691&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=377689&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4063

Note that the Full Feature Software and Driver download is from 11-Dec-2009, but the TWAIN driver download is much newer: 4-Oct-2011. So after installing the full software, be sure to install the updated TWAIN driver so you have the latest scanning drivers for your scanner. Regards, Joe

Check your cables. Remove the cables connected now; both the USB and the power cables completely. Shutdown the PC--not a reboot but shutdown. Then re-attach the cables and turn on the scanner and the PC. If that does not work try another USB cable. Does this scanner require the install of HP software (I'm not asking about HP drivers but applications software that may have come with it)? If so I would also uninstall it, if its not the cables.

If [Windows Fax and Scan] works on the device, then the USB cable and USB port are fine. Although it should appear automatically, one idea is to try to add it manually. Go into [Devices and Printers] and click [Add a device] in the upper left corner. Let us know what happens. Regards, Joe

I have seen this problem before, especially with HP if you have their scanner software (and if printer the printer software) installed so I still recommend you uninstall the software.

What I suggest you do is to uninstall the software but NOT to reinstall it but then to try to install the device in Printers and Devices manually. I assume you have tired to Scan Doctor

It just occurred to me that this device is not supposed to appear in [Devices and Printers]. All-in-One devices do appear there, because they have a printer component, but scanner-only devices, like the Scanjet 5590, appear in [Scanners and Cameras], not in [Devices and Printers]. So take a look for it in [Scanners and Cameras]. Btw, while [Scanners and Cameras] always seems to be in Control Panel in XP, I've had reports from users that it doesn't always appear in Control Panel in W7. If it's not there for you, my suggestion is to make a shortcut for it and place it where it's convenient for you to access, such as the desktop. Here's what the shortcut should point to:

C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\ImagingDevices.exe

Yes, strange as it seems, the above is [Scanners and Cameras] in W7! Regards, Joe
