Paperport - cannot access printing device

Good morning,

we have an XP machine with Paperport 7 on, when you open Paperport for the first time you get a emssage that pops up saying "cannot access printing device" when you click OK papercontinues fine and int he background a message pops up "paper Port Links server encountered a problem and needs to close" hitting OK clears it and closes paperport.

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall and have confirmed the paperport printer is listed in printers but still no change.

I can nto find a manual removal tool for 7, only 8 and up as I though it may be a legacy item left over.

Any ideas?

PP7 is vintage 1999 – well before XP came out. Historically, the PP Image Printer (driver) has been very sensitive to the OS. I've been using PP for nearly 20 years (from version 3 to the latest-and-greatest version 14) and my experience has been that while nearly all of the features of an old PP version will work in a new OS, the PP Image Printer usually won't.

My opinion is that the PP7 print driver will not work in XP, period. If you want a fully functioning PaperPort in XP (or Vista or W7), my advice is to get PP14. There are two editions – Standard and Professional. You may be see a comparison in the file [Comparison Matrix of PP14 Standard and PP14 Professional.pdf] here:

Since you're coming from PP7, the Std edition should be fine for you. List price is $100 but street price is just $50:

Thanks Joe,

Actually these users all have this as a part of their original Xerox package and most are running on XP (100+) and this is the only one with the issue. I know Paperport has never versions and also for many versions seems to have a manual removal tool as well, btu not 7 that I can find anyhow.

Are you saying that the PP7 print driver (PP Image Printer) works in XP? If so, I'll be shocked!

I have the original PP Deluxe 7.0 CD – I'll dig it up and see if it has a manual removal tool on it. If it does, I'll contact the Nuance PP Product Manager to obtain permission to send it to you. Btw, there was a 7.02 version that was released specifically to fix the print driver for W2K. Regards, Joe
Transaction-level recovery for Oracle database

Veeam Explore for Oracle delivers low RTOs and RPOs with agentless transaction log backup and transaction-level recovery of Oracle databases. You can restore the database to a precise point in time, even to a specific transaction.

I do have them on 7.02.02 now but this was a project about 2 years ago. Bfore that they were on a 7.0 version before the 02 on XP and assure you they were working.

if you can find that it would be great. Let me know what you find

I just checked the PP7 Deluxe CD – does not have a removal tool. I also checked the Nuance FTP site that has a lot of old PP versions on it:

There are removal tools for PP8, PP9, and PP10, but not PP7.

I also checked the Visioneer website (Visioneer owned PaperPort before ScanSoft, which then became Nuance):

It also does not have a PP7 removal tool. But both websites have <PP_SP702.exe>, which is the 7.02 (SP2) patch update for an installed PP7. My suggestion at this point is to install that on the machine that isn't working (I downloaded and compared the files from both sites – they are identical).

I am NOT a fan of general purpose removal tools, but that said, if nothing else works for you, you may want to try something like Revo Uninstaller:

I have no idea how it will handle a product as old as PP7. Setting a restore point and/or doing a clone of the drive would be a good idea before giving Revo (or anything like it) a spin. Regards, Joe

Hi mortonmark,
Now that we have editing privileges on Topics, I added some Topics that are relevant for PaperPort. Regards, Joe
