What version of windows are you using?

for windows 7...

Navigate to the folder that holds the notepad files...

in the upper right hand corner is a search box.... enter your search criteria there and hit enter.

Also... PSPad... which is a free general text editor... has a good built in search .... you can use that to search for text within files...
ultraedit is a txt editor on steroids.
will do anything you want, including search on patterns in folders and subfolders

I've used ultraedit too... it is also a good alternative.

PSPad can also use regular expressions to search on patters in folders and subfolders... and also has the added bonus of being 100% free.
For this I use a freeware tool called dview. It loads all files of a folder and shows all their text in one window. You just type a word, and it shows all results, without dialog. To load only .txt files of a folder, you may run from command line like
dview myfolder .txt
