Can I tweet the followers of someone else?

Can I tweet the followers of someone else?

Do other people block tweeting their followers?

Well, if I follow someone, do I get tweets to that account relayed to me?

Is there a directory of political people, fans, political junkies in my sphere to contact?

Question 1: No, you can't tweet to the exact list of followers of another person, or group of people.

Twitter does have what they call "Promoted" tweets, hashtags (#<keyword>), and  suggested followers (entitled "Who to Follow in your left column).  You could conceivably use that, but your message wouldn't be guaranteed to be seen.

Question 2: Yes, if you follow someone, you will get all their tweets in your "timeline".  Twitter is interesting, because if you aren't following it in the moment you will have to scroll back to see all the tweets that you missed.

Question 3: I'm sure that there probably are twitter directories, and there are also twitter services like Refollow that work to help you gain followers in different segments (politics, music, sports, etc.).

I started out building who I follow by taking the blogs, articles and other publications that I read and following those people on twitter.  Over time, I've built up the people that I follow from related articles and online postings, as well as looking at and following retweets of other different authors from my current list of followers.

Let me know if you have any follow-up questions.

Check out http://advertising.twitter.com/2012/08/interest-targeting-broaden-your-reach.html and http://advertising.twitter.com/2012/08/election2012-five-tips-for-twitter.html on http://advertising.twitter.com/.

It sounds like you are trying to use twitter like an email list and it does not work that way.  What you want to do is be interactive.  If you want to reach out to followers of a specific person, engage that person in a conversation by using, @TheirTwitterHandle.

If your tweet is aimed at a party you could use a hashtag, #Democrate or #Republican. You could also use #PolitcalJunkies as people may have those saved searches.

Keep in mind that if you are trying to reach out to group of people, you can't treat this as old interruptive advertising.  @freshcontent eluded to the fact you start out small and build up.  With social media you need to be engaging without being intrusive because you can be easily blocked if nobody wants to "hear" you.
