Bare metal backup of Windows 2008 R2 & Windows 2012

I read that Win 2008 comes with Bare metal backup

a) can this bare metal backup copy 'locked' / 'open' files
without the need to shut down Windows ie take a good
system backup of Windows (& its registry etc) ?

b) for this bare metal recovery, do we need to boot up from a CD?

c) can we backup to spare disk space (say a shared drive or NAS) ?

d) what's the difference between bare metal backup for Win 2008
    & win 2012?

a) VSS is used when taking backups of files that might be in use, locked, etc....
b) You will need to boot from the same version of Windows you are using.  So if you have Windows 2008 you'll need a Windows 2008 DVD
c) It is recommended that you backup to a seperate disk, and infact I don't think Windows will let you backup to the same disk.
d) Not sure the differences on those...

One question is what are you backing up?  Is it a Domain Controller, Exchange server, SQL Database?  There are other ways to back those up as well.  Also how long can your business be without that server?  If you have no other servers running I highly recommend getting a secondary sever so you don't have a single point of failure, or getting a different type of backup like one from Datto http://www.dattobackup.com/
