FM - Approach to Limited Security - 2nd Try

What is your recommended approach for limited security. The simple answer would be View only so that salesmen (for example) cannot edit Vacancies or Leases, etc. However, this does not work as often a global field is modified upon startup. So, I can set up limited security and make all globals modifiable; however, this gets cumbersome when I add global fields; I sometimes forget to modify the security and then the users get error warnings.

Is there an easier way?

    Accepted Solution

One way to deal with startup issues is to set the file to automatically login with a username and password that allows access to the various fields you need to set such as your global. Once all that is done, you can present the user with a dialog asking for their username and password and then perform a scripted Re-Login.

You also might consider whether you are using Global fields in places where you could be using Global ($$) Variables instead. If you are simply holding values or preferences and not needing globals to act as Key fields, then setting $$ variables can simplify things.

Good idea on Global Variables, but they are limited within the file whereas I believe fields can be used across files.  However, now that we are down to only 4 files, possibly I can set a global $$ variable for each file.
