moving exchange vm to new datastore on new storage

Greetings,

my exchange server needed additional space one day and I had none on the existing datastore so I added an extent on another datastore. I now need to move the server to another storage unit. I do not have storage vMotion. I was thinking of using Veeam to replicate either directly or by restoring a back up to the new storage device, then mapping the replica to the original and replicating. the latter seems more efficient. however, my concern is the extent on the other datastore. How will that be affected? Will it be disregarded and the VM replicated in whole? I believe it would be as a restore from backup would not have knowledge of the extent; it would just see the backup file. Is that correct?

any suggestions on moving this beast of a machine (600 GB) as efficiently as possible are greatly appreciated.

I would use Veeam Backup Free Edition - Quick Migration

Why not try the new Veeam Backup Free Edition - Quick Migration

http://www.veeam.com/virtual-machine-backup-solution-free.html

Migrate VMs between hosts and/or datastores

The Quick Migration utility in Veeam Backup Free Edition lets you migrate a live VM to any host or datastore—even if you don’t use clusters or shared storage.

Quick Migration leverages native VMware technology, as well as exclusive Veeam technology, to accommodate any migration scenario, including:

Migrating a VM from a local datastore to shared storage
Migrating a VM between 2 separate hosts and datastores

With Quick Migration’s point-and-click interface, you can easily move a live VM from any source to any destination, even if vMotion and vStorage Motion aren’t available. And with Veeam’s SmartSwitch technology, downtime is reduced to mere seconds.

Yes, it's very good, and FREE!

and you do not need vMotion or Storage vMotion!

while the veeam migration is available and a great feature, I decided to just go with some down time and migrated through vCenter. worked without issue.
