I/O device error (1117) when backing up Outlook PST file

When running Argentum backup software (a simple file copying backup program), I keep getting an error message saying "The request could not be performed due to an I/O device error." I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, the PST file is an active archive of about 17 GB, and the computer and backup hard drive are relatively new. I originally thought it was a problem that the backup drive was FAT 32, but I converted it to NTFS and still get the error. I have run Chkdsk on both drives but error persists.
