I/O device error (1117) when backing up Outlook PST file

When running Argentum backup software (a simple file copying backup program), I keep getting an error message saying "The request could not be performed due to an I/O device error."  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, the PST file is an active archive of about 17 GB, and the computer and backup hard drive are relatively new.  I originally thought it was a problem that the backup drive was FAT 32, but I converted it to NTFS and still get the error.  I have run Chkdsk on both drives but error persists.

    Just a couple things here

When copying or backing up the PST.

Is it open in outlook or closed?
Quite often Outlook can keep an exclusive hold on them not allowing them to be copied unless closed

Is the PST and Copy to Locatin Both on the Local PC?
Microsoft and Outlook Dont support PSTs over the network as they are famous for loosing the connection. Especially when they are large in size.

Make sure both copy form and copy to locations are local

What Version of Outlook is being used and how old is this PS?
Obviously this is a Unicode PST

But if a 2007 UNicode PST is has a maximum of 20GB
17GB is getting towards that Maximum Size
Quite often PST at this size and above start to show signs of corruption

Its important befrore they reach their maximum size to archive out any old data, create a New PST, or Seperate it out into smaller ones

I actually solved this myself.  At the time I posted the question to Experts Exchange, my CHKDSK scan on the C: drive had not completed, and when it did, I was able to complete the backup of the PST file I was having trouble with.  I did find the answer helpful and on point.  Thanks!
