What is parsing, I have a request to create software

What is parsing?
I have a request to create a software which can parse database what they have.

They want it in C or C#

I think they want some data some that

I am not an expert in programming.

Some guidance is appreciated.

I have at-least started with the help of http://www.parse-o-matic.com/

Many thanks to all.

If you think something difficult, it is always difficult.
It will become easy once you get into it.

It may involve reading flat files, extracting only the required fields and putting into another file in CSV or some format that is easily imported into the database.

In this case how to start writing a program.
Please give me an example which you know.

So that I can start working and will get a start.
I am in kind of stuck where to start

Here is some information regarding parsing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parse#Programming_languages

First step is to understand the requirements and see they need what I understand.  You, however, need a lot of programming background to write a parser.

Is C++ an option?  Does it need to be extremely fast?  If not, you can probably use regular expressions.

First step is to do it manually on the paper so that you understand what is required.

anyone can give an example to understand how it works

Can you give us an idea of what you already know.  You said "I am not an expert in programming."  That's not enough information for guidance.

Also, farzanj's "first step" is right on.  It is critical to understand the requirements.  At the very least you need a short statement, a paragraph or two, that clearly states the requirements.  This is called a "statement of scope."  For a simple project, this is the place to start.  (For a more complicated project, you would need a statement of work.)

The point of all this is that I'm saying that faranz is correct.  You need to understand what should be done and then if you want meaningful help from us, you'll need to share that with us.

My comment would simply be......

If you need to ask "What is Parsing" then the task you are being asked to undertake in C or C# is beyond you. You need to ask a programmer to do the job for you.

Pointing you at resources is one thing, developing applications for you is a different thisg altogether.

As commented by Neilsr it is little difficult who is new to programming. <br />Once again thanks to all.<br /><br />I will start new question if I am stuck in the middle
