Cisco Handset Auto-Registration

In the VoIP set up we have, the auto registration of handsets is not disabled by default.  however in order for a handset to become registered with CUCM  it must have a pre-configured configuration file.  I don't really know anything about these configuration files so is there any way that a handset can become registered with CUCM without this configuration file with auto registration still being enabled?

Are there any major risks to having auto registration enabled in the above scenario?

There are 3 ways to add and register phones to CUCM (what version?):
- Auto registration
- Manual provisioning
- Bulk provisioning

If you do not want to enable auto-registration, just go to Device > Phone and add new phones. An administrator user with enough privileges should be able to see the Add and Delete phones buttons.

so if a phone gets connected and it does not have the configuration file loaded will it still be registered and workable because auto-register has been enabled?
