We are having an iussue where an excel workbook has a lot of VLOOKUP links to another workbook in order to fill in various fields, and the update process can take a long time. If we try to change the source or update the source it again takes a very long time. Sometimes it does not even manage to finish
The VLOOKUP scripts are in one column on each of 253 worksheets and occupy around 20 rows on each worksheet
The excel version is 2003
Both The linked workbook and reference workbook are on the network

Is the slow response due to the number of worksheets with the VLOOKUP scripts or is it a network issue

You are working near the upper limit of a 2003 workbook (255 worksheets).   The performance can be due to memory limitations (what is your O/S? , installed memory?) or network (what is your data speed?  10, 100, 1000 mbits?)
How many pages are used in the vlookup reference workbook?   If it one worksheet, can you copy it into the existing workbook to eliminate the link and reduce the memory requirement?

Have you set the workbook to manual recalculation to better control the processing requirement?   What version of Excel are you using - 2003, 2007, 2010?
