Dvd Drive not accessible incorrect function

I've a server with window 2003 std sp2.

Recently the dvdrom was unable to read the disc insert to it.

It will display error F:\not accessible. incorrect function.

I tried to update the driver. After several retry, the dvd/cd-rom drive in the hardware manager was gone.

Any resolution to this problem?

Or if the drive is bad attach an external USB drive to it.

Check if the drive is bad, if it is, just replace it. Usually you can test that by trying to boot the server from the drive using a bootable CD or DVD (or better test it with both, as the CD part uses a different laser than the DVD part). If you can't boot from the drive, then it has failed and you need to replace it.
