.doc and .xls files slow to open after windows updates

Hello Everyone,

My users that are connected via Site to Site VPN all of a sudden started to experience Word and Excel documents taking at least 4 minutes to open. Following are the details of the setup.

The documents are on a mapped drive from the remote server and are small to medium in size.
We are using Office 2003
large Power Points from the remote server open just fine in a reasonable amount of time.
documents that are .docx and .xlsx open just fine within seconds.
The only files that are taking so long to open are .doc and .xls.
The problem started after installing a bunch of Office Security Updates and the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 3.

Have any of you experienced this problem and if so did you find a solution?

I had similar problem, but with Office 2007. I reinstalled Office, didn´t helped, I reinstalled Windows XP, helped only for some time. Finaly, I´ve made local copy of folder through Distributed File System function on Windows 2003 server and it solved my problem

schima_cz's comment is a possible solution to the problem and will work well. I've found that the lag is caused by an Office File Validation (OFV) update. This update has affected Excel for most people but has caused the lag for both Word and Excel in my network. I've fixed the issue by disabling OFV through Group Policy. Here's a link explaining some of what's happening. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2570623

Both solutions will fix the issue. After some more research I found the cause to the problem. I'm marking schima_cz's comment as the best solution because with his you can keep OFV active which adds to security.
