What are the best 3rd party forums available?

Hello, I'm currently doing some research into different forum solutions (message board) for our website.

This could be something hosted on our .NET 1-3.5 capable server or something hosted on a 3rd party website.

Can you recommend a few really good forum services? It should be fully customizable with all the bells and whistlers of a good forum.

vBulletin is akin to Norton or Symantec of the virus world... It burnt into people's memory banks as everyone's heard of it and rolls of the tongue well.  It doesn't mean it's great... Just the go to standard because it's been around a while and it's the first name that pops into everyone's mind when they think AV.  Samething with vBulletin...  It doesn't mean it's great, but everyone uses it.

I like JForum and IPB.

The thing to consider is security, and hence, self or third-party hosted.  In the SaaS model you have all the benefits of not having to maintain it or upgrade it, and security matters are handled by the host... But there is a running cost.  Self-hosting, you pay one time (or if open-source it's free) and you're dealing with the operational costs, bandwidht, hacks, and other issues...

Check this board out...  Scroll down and you'll see a lot of people giving strong arguements for their preferred vendor.
