I have a client with an SBS 2011 server about a year old and they have recently started having a problem where the Microsoft Exchange Address Book service will not start.

When we try to start the service manually it attempts to start and then stops. The error in the Application log is:

Event ID: 1008
Source: MSExchangeAB
Details: Unable to register the MSExchangeAB RPC interface. Failed with the error code. The endpoint is a duplicate (1740).

It is running Exchange 2010 Service Pack 1.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

I have tried that and it did not work. Same behaviour still exists.

I am hoping this server is a DC and GC, if not promote it to a GC and reboot the server.

Mostly I've seen this issue common to Exchange box working as DC and not GC.

How do i tell if its a GC or DC? It is part of small business server 2011, and the only Exchange on the network since it was installed.

GC is global catalog server. DC is domain controller. SBS needs to be both and is both by default.

Follow those steps to ensure your server is a GC.

Thanks for the link I have confirmed the server is already configured as a GC.

Found what the problem was - a service on the server called spnsrvnt.exe, from some software called "Safenet Sentinel" was using port 6002. I disabled the Safenet Sentinel service from starting and after a reboot of the server the MS Exchange Address Book service started working again.

Nobody at the client seems to know what the Safenet Sentinel software is, and everything is still working since we disabled the service, so I'm guessing it's a pointless 'value added extra' piece of software that was installed automatically with something else.

I found someone with a similar problem here, and removing the offending software also worked for them as well.

Found solution myself after running a netstat command and examining the results along with many internet searches.
