SBS 2008 Exchange Service Pack 2 install failure
Hi All,
We have tried applying Exchange 2007 Service Pack 2 for Small Business Server 2008, the installation got part way through and failed at the point where it installs the files for the service pack. The error logged is below:
Installing product D:\Exchange SP2\exchangeserver.msi failed. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance. Error code is 1601.
[19/09/2012 12:05:01 AM] [1] The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance
Since this error i cannot re-install the service pack using the SBS tool as it is not detecting a Exchange installation, also cannot manually re-run the service pack from command setup.com /Mode:upgrade this also fails.
The services are all set to disabled, and the exchange server 2007 folder within Program Files is missing. I am conccerned about starting the services manually if this will have any implecations or not.
If anyone would be of any assistance that would be great.
Thanks.

I suggest you download Exchange SP2 and run that on it's own, then re-run the SBS SP2 install.
I would first try to re-register msiexec.exe.
In an elevated prompt run the following commands:
msiexec /unregister
msiexec /regserver
In an elevated prompt run the following commands:
msiexec /unregister
msiexec /regserver

If i try and re-run the SP2 manually from the download i get the error:
The Exchange binary files are not installed, but the backup settings registry key is present. Only build-to-build upgrade mode is avaliable
If from the command i run: setup.com /Mode:upgrade i get the following errors:
Setup /m:upgrade

I know the question is being closed - by why SP2? SP3 is the latest service pack for Exchange 2007 and doesn't require a wrapper. You can just run setup.exe and get on with it.
