Alternate Access Mapping

I have a web app that is currently reached by going to http://servername:24679
The users of this web app want to reach their SP site by using http://tardis.

So I set up an AAM for that web app and set the intranet zone to http://tardis.
The network admin then did his thing with the internal DNS.

Now when I browse to http://tardis I go to the IIS7 welcome screen because it is resolving to the default IIS site on the server. If I go to http://tardis:24679 I get to the site fine.

How can I map to this name without having to specify the port name?

I didn't touch IIS I thought it was sacred (like SQL) when it comes to sharepoint

I added this to the IIS site bindings but not 100% it's entered correctly as I still get the IIS welcome screen (have run ipconfig/flushdns on both client and server and have recycled the app pool)
Attached image shows the IIS bindings for this site

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

Binding for tardis needs to be on port 80 :)

Tried that too, no change. Will try again, flush, recycle and let you know

Yep that worked, must had needed a few mins to propagate. So is it normal to have to go to IIS when setting up an AAM?

Yes.  SharePoint only does it when the web app is created.  After that, for all other AAM additions, you have to manually touch IIS.
