You need to go back and ask what the requirements are. What are they looking for? Are they looking this at a security standpoint (how to protect users/data/systems)? Or are they looking at this from a hr/business/cost standpoint?

Are they looking for IT policies for users? What about for administrators? workstations? servers? What about for software/applications/devices/etc? Physical security requirements? Training requirements? There are many many ways of going about this - just tell them that you need to get clarification as to exactly what they expect or want.

A good reference is: http://www.sans.org/security-resources/policies/

Use google. Many policies are straightforward and are even listed on the company websites.

Search for "it policy template"

Most are lists of DOs and Don'ts. I cannot point you towards any file on net but they are easy to find.

@ThinkPaper,

The company is developing software for another organisation; they will be hosting the applications and database on behalf of that organisation.

Thanks for the link it gave me an idea on where to start.

I did the first draft and presented it - they liked it ... of course they were able to give me more info once I asked them the same questions you gave me. I seemed like a champ.

Thanks a lot
