We are currently testing Windows 8 RTM in our network for deployment after release.  The only issue we have run into so far is that IE10 in Metro/Modern mode will not work at all.  The program launches however it goes to a blank page with no address and will not let you type an address.  Upon further investigation I have noticed that there are no encoding settings.  I'm assuming this has something to do with group policy as we do apply zone mapping, sites and Internet Explorer branding via Internet Explorer Maintenance.  Please advise.

Thanks

I am using Windows 8 Release Candidate (I think, but not the Consumer Release). IE10 works fine there. I use it from the Desktop Screen.

Try three things:

1. I notice the first time I open IE10 it appears to be inactive. I don't know whether I am just being to quick or whether it is an IE10 bug. I close IE10, re-open it, and it works fine.  Try that.

2. Does IE10 work from the Destktop Screen (vs. the Metro Start Screen). I recall it works from both places for me (subject to point 1 above).

3. Is your Windows 8 login real or is it an email address. Try a real userid and see if that works. I use the real userid.

IE10 does work from the desktop and I have tried closing and reopening it.  I'm thinking it has something to do with Group policy.

I just checked the use of IE10 from the Start Menu. I have the same issue as from the Desktop. That is, the first time I open IE, it opens but fails to work. I exit IE and restart IE and it works fine (both the Desktop and from the Start Menu).

Is this machine on a domain?  It may be you have to use the desktop on a domain. I have not tried that.  I do not have any other Group Policies of my own on this machine (that is, policies are default as at the time of installation).

This machine is on a domain and I think it has something to do with some of our current policies.  I'm just trying to figure out which policy it is.

Any update on this?  I'm sure it is something in group policy but I'm not sure what it is.

Thanks

In Internet Explorer 10, Internet Explorer Maintenance Group Policy Settings is defunct in this version.

You have to use group policy preferences but I am disappointed about this as well. Now I have find a way to configure everything using Group policy preferences.

I find it more difficult to switch to the group policy preferences.

Especially Favorites; not sure how to create folders and insert links inside the folders using group policy preferences.

I actually figured this out.  The issue was caused by a Group Policy that we put in place for one of our applications that caused the issue.  After changing the permissions to inherit for HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\SideBySide, the issue was resolved.  Thanks for your effort.
