Could you explain and provide links on how enterprise virus software works (for example Symantec Enterprise).  I would like to know in a client / server environment what is installed on the server and client.  Do each client and server update individually?  Is the login script used at all?

Thanks for your feedback

Simply putting it forward, Control Center would be installed on one machine and other systems would have only the Anti-virus application installed. In case of Symantec Control Center is called as SEPM (Symantecc Endpoint Protection Manager). Using SEPM you can install the AV on other system remotely if the the systems are in domain or else you would need to provide the individual Administrator's credentials for the install. You could also install the AV manually by visiting each system.

Updated would be downloaded by the SEPM and pushed to clients. You can specify the frequency at which clients would check the servers for updates.

You could also modify the update policy so that clients with laptop can get the updates directly from Internet.

These are the common features which are available on almost all the commercial client/server anti-virus package like McAfee, Trend, Sophos, Kaspersky, ESET, etc.
