mobile device to read pdfs for few hours a day on the go..

laptop is too bulky.. the need is to carry something bigger than cell phone to hold many pdfs and other reading stuff... on the go..

is ipad the best? what else is comparable and out there? (samsung, motorola etc)

The Kindle Fire will read pdfs, as well as e-books.  You copy pdfs to it after you connect to it via USB cable.
Any one of the cheap ($100.00 or less) Android tablets will do the trick, though look for a capacitive screen rather than a resistive screen.  I found a 7 inch tablet just fine for reading and they have the added advantage of being able to check email and surf the web (though web surfing on a 7 inch tablet is not great), and they also let you watch movies.
