Windows Easy Transfer

I just bought an i5/windows 7 pc. my previous pc is an old xp machine. to transfer data files from my old to my new pc i followed directions  in windows 7 and installed windows easy transfer in my old machine and ran it (saving the exported files to my external hard drive. then moved the external hard drive to my new machine and ran windows easy transfer again. here's my problem: now everytime that i use my OLD pc (with the external hard drive connected to it), i cannot get the hard drive to display my saved files. oddly, when i double-click on the external drive icon the only thing that happens is that windows easy transfer starts up! i've tried uninstalling the external drive, then allowing windows xp to "see" and re-install the drive, but the same thing happens: windows easy transfer starts up when i double-click on the drive icon. i also checked in control panel--under add or remove programs--to see if i could locate and uninstall windows easy transfer, but cannot see any reference to windows easy transfer. any ideas? thank you.

The windows easy transfer does not create a list of backed up files onto the external drive it creates a easy transfer file, this file will contain the who slew of data, and settings from your old pc. This is why you have to run the windows easy tranfer program on the new computer to unpackage the easy transfer file on the external drive. The easy transfer program will  extract your data and your settings from this file on the external drive onto the new computer.

copy them manually! you have external drive, so copy all your data, images, email from the old pc to the external drive, and move them to the new pc

If your external HD is on the new machine - OF course clicking on the old shortcut to the ext HD on the old XP Machine is not going to find it so it will start the Easy Transfer- Suggest that first - if all the data is transferred  over to the new PC - go to add/remove prog on xp and uninstall the program.

Then On the new P{C - Set up your Network for network discovery on - sharing on and no password on the advanced network setting - Make sure that it's home or Work not public as the network type.

Then Share the external Drive to Everyone read/write

When you go to the XP my Network places - you should see the new PC - Dbl click on that and then you should see the shared drive - Right mouse click on it and map network drive - - Delete any other references or shortcuts to the external drive on the XP machine as they won't be valid.

If it's avaiable - use the same drive letter on the mapped drive as the old external drive was on before - Then any shortcuts on the XP may still work

Make sure you uninstall the easy transfer on the Win 7 machine as well

sorry, but still not clear. i transfer the external drive cable to the old machine when that's in use, then back to the new pc when that's in use. when i'm on the old pc, and with the external drive connected(!) to the old pc as well, when i double-click the external drive icon, instead of displaying the external drive contents the windows easy transfer starts up. i cannot view/use the external drive contents.

what i'm trying to do is to transfer my old files to my new pc by transferring my external drive from old to new pc. but with my external drive seemingly unable to be accessed (because windows easy transfer starts up when i try to access the drive) i can't transfer files.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Microsoft.

1st - did you uninstall the easy transfer - if not - do so

Then check the properties of the shortcut you are using to access the ext drive

Goto My Computer - Double click directly on the external drive (I have to assume the Drive letter may have changed - which is why you can't get to it

Are both PCs plugged into the network at the same time (to your Router)
If so just leave it plugged into the new PC and share it - so the old PC can access it.

I suspect the new PC has taken ownership of the files as soon as you plugged it in tho the new PC - you can fix that but why when stright networking is a much better option

I re-read your comment--further explanation required.

1.I tried to uninstall Windows Easy Transfer.  I could not locate an uninstall feature for Windows Easy Transfer under Control Panel. Will check again.

2. I am already going to "My Computer" to try to access the external drive contents. Once again, when I double-click on it that's when Windows Easy Transfer starts up. I'm not using a shortcut to the external drive.

3. There is no network--just 2 pc's--that's why I'm switching the external drive cable from machine to machine.

Thanks for your ongoing help...

this is nuts. when i'm on my old pc with my external drive connected...when i go to "My Computer" and click on my F drive icon, then click on "Properties," all the information indicates it's my western digital external drive. But when I double-click the same icon--as though i wanted to see the drive's contents--immediately the windows easy transfer program starts. the drive contents do not appear. as mentioned before, have tried deleting the drive and letting plugnplay see it and re-install. it does so but the same situation results. also, i still cant find an uninstall feature for windows easy transfer...

It is probably due to the fact that the easy transfer program is installed on the external drive not on your computer, and when you click on the external drive the easy transfer program runs. You can not browse the files on the hard drive on the older version of easy transfer. Download and run the newer easy transfer program found on this website: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/products/features/windows-easy-transfer This version you can browse files that are backed up on the external devise.

The website gives you a tutorial how to use the software, and even has a video how to use the software, as well you can download the most recent version of the software

The setting for Autostart are applying to the Ext Drive like they would a CD or DVD
Try Right Mouse Clicking on the Drive icon and go "Explore"

See if you can get to the drive contents now

To Remove Easy Transfer do the following

So, to remove WET completely and restore 'normal' HD icons and browsing do this:
1. open my computer, select Tools>Folder Options to open the Folder Options window

2. In the View tab select Show Hidden Files and Folders

3. Then Right Click the external the ext hard drive icons and select Explore

4. Find Windows easy transfer.exe, windowseasytrasfer folder, and autorun.inf and delete them from the root of both drives

5. reboot...

that did it! can't thank you enough for your assistance. i was unaware of that "explore" function, and though i know of the autorun function i had not associated it with issue. again--thanks much.
