Duplication of contacts when using Activesync with Iphone or Ipad

Every time I sync a users Exchange 2010 mailbox it causes hundreds of duplicate contacts on the Iphone or Ipad.

Things tried:-

1.Disable the Iphone and Ipad Activesync accounts on each device
2. Clean up the Outlook contacts list removing duplicates.
3. Export the clean contacts list to a PST file.
4. In Outlook disable cache mode and delete the contacts
5. Reimport the clean contacts from the .PST file
6 Turn on cache mode and leave it to sync in Outlook
7. Add the Email Active Sync account on the Ipad and Iphone and let them sync

The next thing that happens is that hundreds of duplications appear on both devices. Eventually this populates the Outlook account too. Left to to run after a week I counted 22,000 duplications.

Any comments would be welcome as this is driving me nuts.

Thanks in advance!

That usually means that something is modifying the contacts on the device or in Outlook. If it is across all devices in your fleet and you don't install anything on all devices for the users, then that points to something that you are running on the network. CRM or other contact management type tools are the usual culprits.

Simon.
Check your Outlook add-ins and disable one by one.
Check for any updates to the Apple devices. (minor updates only)

Here's the odd thing...

I added this users mailbox via the same Activesync method to my old Ipad (Ipad 1) and no address duplicates appear!

I'm starting to think it may be something installed on the newer Ipod and Iphone that's causing this.
Apparently not the only one... This is a huge problem with iOS 5 and below...

Apparently this may be fixed with iOS 6.

I will try to upgrade those devices and report back.. Thanks guys

Only after searching the Apple forums and trying a new IOS was this problem resolved. Still Apple won't comment or mention that they fixed what was a huge problem affecting many users....
