Canon DR 1210-C scanner and USB issues

I bought a Canon Scanner DR-1210C.  Running Windows Vista.

Scanner shows up as installed on both the device manager (no excl. marks) and the control panel under "scanners and panels".  Display on scanner shows "ready" but with an error icon that suggests (according to the canon manual) a usb problem.

The cord I am using did NOT come with the machine, but clearly says "usb 2.0" on it.  My (older) Toshiba Satellite P200 specs say that I have USB v.2.0 ports.

The USB devices installed have NO exclamation points, read "enhanced" (Which i understand to be 2.0) and are all working properly.  arrrr!!!  frustration.  Any ideas?  See attached from user's manualCanon-Manual.pdf

I've also installed/uninstalled latest driver that I could find.  AND re-booted the machine several times.

Hi Wendy,
My first suggestion on scanning problems is always to download and install the latest-and-greatest drivers from the scanner manufacturer's website. You said that you've installed the latest driver you could find, but in case that's not the right one, you should surely be able to find it here:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/office/imageformula_scanners/imageformula_dr_1210c/imageformula_dr_1210c_universal_color_scanner#DriversAndSoftware

Seems that Canon supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista for the DR-1210C (you didn't say which Vista version you're running).

Two other thoughts. First, are you plugging the scanner into a USB hub? If so, I've seen that be a problem with some USB devices, so try plugging it directly into a USB port on the computer, not into a hub. Also, try more than one USB port - sometimes a USB port will go bad. Second, what you already mentioned - the cable. I never cease to be amazed at the number of times a bad cable is the culprit. Try some other cable that you absolutely know is good and/or try the current cable on some other USB 2.0device to be certain it works. Regards, Joe

Joe - let me get on this.  The USB is not plugged into a port and I've got 6 usb ports on my computer, several of which I have tried.

I will re-look for the driver at the link you provided and then my last idea was to buy a new cable!

I'm running vista 32

I will be back in touch later today :-)

Joe the driver site is the one I used; however 3 different drivers are listed and I'm not able to distinguish between them.  I THINK I've installed the 1st  and 3rd one and another not listed that I found with the file name: 'd871 mux.exe'.  I will try the MIDDLE driver and see what happens!  (Sort of like Goldilocks!)

Sounds good, Wendy. Of course, it could be the scanner itself that is malfunctioning. Do you have a second computer that you can test it on, or perhaps a friend's computer? Would be nice to know that the scanner itself is not the problem, although my money is on something in the environment, not the scanner. In any case, looking forward to hearing back from you later today. Regards, Joe

Good Point.  I am test-riding the scanner from a dealer who agreed to sell it for a client.  Again, my bet is on the environment also.  I tried the "middle" driver and it wouldn't even load.  I'm gonna buy a new cable and take it from there.

Interesting...the fact that a dealer is selling it for a client does raise a red flag. Do you know if the seller has used it successfully on any of his machines? Anyway, another thought: since it shows up in Scanners and Cameras (you said Scanners and Panels but I'm sure you meant Scanners and Cameras in Control Panel), I'm wondering if it can scan via software. In other words, maybe the error icon on the scanner's display panel does not necessarily indicate a problem on the PC. The section of the manual you posted talks about the scanner not being recognized, but if it's showing up in Scanners and Cameras as well as the Device Manager with no exclamation points, that tells me it's being properly recognized. Try doing a scan with any software that supports TWAIN or WIA, such as the built-in Paint applet or the excellent freeware IrfanView:

Hi Joe - I love irfanview!  Tried to scan and it did not recognize the scanner.  However, since I have started this process, my Scanners and Cameras 'function' on the control panel will not open.  Earlier I had it opened and it showed the scanner.  So now I'm trying to figure out how to get that reinstalled.

I bought a new cord - no change AND it occurred to me that if the Device Manager showed the device working properly, it would HAVE to have a good connection to the computer to even be able to tell me that.

any thoughts would be appreciated :-)

Joe - BTW, the dealer is one I trust and have a good working relationship with.  However, good news, I think.  I was able to go to Control Panel Home (not the classic view), click on hardware and sound and "Scan a document or picture" using Windows Fax and Scan.

Q:  Do all scans go into jpeg format?  I have to fax the pages I'm scanning to my home company and am wondering if they can "accept" jpeg images on the other end.

Thanks for all the help!  I'll post your points.

Excellent!

> Do all scans go into jpeg format?

Most software lets you control the output format. Windows Fax and Scan supports BMP, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF (you control this via Tools>Scan Settings>Edit>File type). Since you love IrfanView, you probably know that it allows for lots of output formats. One thing you may not know is that it also supports PDF, although you have to install a plugin for that. Easiest way is to go to the IV home page and click the PlugIns link on the left to download the PlugIns. After you install the plugins, PDF will be an output format choice.

> I have to fax the pages I'm scanning to my home company and am wondering if they can "accept" jpeg images on the other end.

Well, if you're sending a fax, then it will be a fax on the other end and it doesn't matter what the format is on your end, as long as your faxing software can accept JPEG as the input. That said, I usually scan to PDF (sometimes TIFF) when I'm faxing.

You're welcome! I appreciate the points, but you'll have to change something to make that happen. You must have accidentally accepted the wrong answer (one of your own), because it says:

By reading her last post (ID: 38425412), you can see that Wendy obviously meant to assign the points to me. I don't know if she needs to correct this or if the Moderators do it, but I decided to follow the instructions and click the Object button. Regards, Joe

Wendy,
The message I mentioned above ("wendy823 requested that this question be closed by accepting wendy823's comment #a38425412 (0 points) as the solution...") said that the question would be closed on 26-Sep unless I clicked the Object button. So I did that, and it seems to have taken away the close request, but I'm not sure what's next. Perhaps you need to accept one of my answers or maybe an EE Moderator needs to jump in. Anyway, I'm sure we'll get it sorted. In the meantime, let me know if my last post about JPEGs/faxing raised any additional questions for you. Regards, Joe

Joe- not sure WHAT I did, but I ended up assigning 20 pts each to 5 of your comments and 400 to the final comment.  EE said that I had to assign at least 20 points to each comment....huh?  Let me know if this is acceptable and if you see the points pop up!

Yes, perfectly acceptable assigned that way - and the points popped up! Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any other issues. Have a great rest of the weekend. Regards, Joe
