Not sure if I got a full backup on TimeMachine

had two external HDD which I had used with Lion.  I ended up re-formatting them for Mountain Lion, since I found it difficult otherwise to add a password.  So on the first backup, I expected it to save about 154GB, which is the used amount of my 480 GB drive. Instead, it's much smaller: 89 GB.

Can this be right?  If so, canI do a verify after a full backup?

Thanks.

Right, I think the "ignore folders" is a good place to look.

How do I do that?

There were no folder excluded.   I got a message when ejecting that there were two partitions on the disk, so I presume that is the problem.

How do I remove all partitions, reformat (with password) start fresh with that disk?

I plugged it in again, but that message did not display this time on eject.

Please explain the step to start new with this disk...

Thanks
