How to Install BESX when BES 4.1 is working with Exchange 2003

Hi Experts,

I have BES 4.1 running with Exchange 2003, I have installed Exchange 2010 in the environment and I want to install BESX that should work with Exchange 2010, once its installed I want to move all the mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 and I dont want to re-activate the user blackberries once they are moved from BES 4.1 to BESX.

Can someone please tell me which account should I use to install the BESX, i already have an account besadmin that is used for the BES, should I move this account to Exchange 2010 and use it for the installation of BESX.

If i move the account, will the existing BES server will still operate without any problems? and what extra permissions do I need to assign if I move the BES account to Exchange 2010?

Last question is, once BESX is installed and working with Exchange 2010 with BES working with Exchange 2003, what is the right process of moving the users mailboxes and BES accounts.

Do i need to move the mailboxes first then the BES account to BESX using the tranporter tool?

Many Thanks for the help.

You can use the same BESADMIN account with multiple BES installations.
Therefore just run through the regular instructions to setup the permissions in Exchange 2010. The account doesn't have to be moved to Exchange 2010 until you are ready to do so as part of the regular migration.

However, you will have to reactivate the Blackberry devices. One of the restrictions of BES Express is that you cannot migrate from another version to it. You cannot use the Transporter Suite for example to move users between the old and the new server.

Therefore the only way to migrate the Blackberry devices between BES servers is to reactivate. I usually prefer to wipe them. BES Express will work with Exchange 2003, so the Blackberry devices will need to be moved before the mailboxes.

Hi Simon,

I am confused aboutt he following command.

Add-ADPermission -InheritedObjectType User -InheritanceType Descendents -ExtendedRights Send-As -User "BESAdmin" -Identity "CN=Users,DC=<domain_1>,DC=<domain_2>,DC=<domain_3>"

What should I add in domain_1 or Domain_2, do i need to add the netbios domain name in domain_1?

My domain name for example is microsoft.local or do i need to add all the domain names that are hosted on exchange?

Thanks.
The domain is the WINDOWS domain. Nothing to do with the email domain.
Therefore if your domain is example.com then the command will be

Add-ADPermission -InheritedObjectType User -InheritanceType Descendents -ExtendedRights Send-As -User "BESAdmin" -Identity "CN=Users,DC=example,DC=com,>"

Simon.
Simon,

When I am trying run the command I am getting the following error

Active Directory operation failed on abc.xyz.local. This error is not retriable. Additional information: Acce
ss is denied.
Active directory response: 00000005: SecErr: DSID-03151E07, problem 4003 (INSUFF_ACCESS_RIGHTS), data 0
    + CategoryInfo          : WriteError: (0:Int32) [Add-ADPermission], ADOperationException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : 704E8B09,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.RecipientTasks.AddADPermission

How can I fix this?
The error means what it says. Access Denied. Could be that you don't have permissions, not using an elevated Shell, something like that.

Hi,

I ran the setup and everything work fine, when it comes to find the exchange server and mailbox, it picks up the 2003 Echange server and the mailbox of BESADMIN fromt he 2003 exchange server.

I clicked on cerify click only administrator permission and pressed next, it came back that it cannot find the view only administrator permission.

I checked it and i can see thar BES admin has the view only administrator permission, can you tell me what can be wrong?

Do i have to move the BES admin mailbox from 2003 to 2010 because this BESX will be for 2010 servers?

Thanks.
No, you don't have to move the mailbox across.
If the permissions are correct, then don't worry about it for now. Instead test it using the test tool in the Blackberry tools to confirm it works correctly.

Simon.
I have not pressed yes on the last screen where its telling me that the permissions cannot be verified, where can i get the test tools to run it and confirm before i press on the last step?

THanks.
They are all provided in the installed directory, under Utilities. Command line tools though and you will have to use a mailbox on Exchange 2010.

Simon.

Just as an additional bit on this question - RIM are offering free upgrades to BES 5 (the full version) for BES 4 users now.

You might want to look at that as well.
