WSUS settings keep changing
Greetings. I have been trying to solve a WSUS problem for a few weeks. Any help would be appreciated.
I have two servers running Windows SBS and four client computers running XP or XP Tablet. One server is the WSUS server on port 8530 and all of the computers are directed to obtain their updates from the intranet server.
I first noticed the problem when I realized that none of the computers, including the computer hosting the WSUS server, had reported in for nearly 5 months. They seemed to be down loading updates though -- at least some of them. Try as I might, I cannot get the connections to work properly. It is particularly frustrating because everything had been working just fine for over a year.
I am pretty sure the problem is in my GPO because running ClientDiag gave me:
WSUS Client Diagnostics Tool

Notice that is has "WUServer = WUA", which seems to be the problem. So I deleted the GPO and created a new one. Now, when I force the GPO update, I get:

Connection to server. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . PASS
SelfUpdate folder is present. . . . . . . . . . . . . . PASS
This seems to be a much better result. However, if I wait about a minute and re-run ClientDiag, I get the first output again. Additionally, when I run ClientDiag after running the gpupdate /force, the output shows AU Option is 3, which was the option setting in the old GPO. And when the ClientDiag output returns to the original output, I get AU Option is 4, which is the setting on the new GPO that I created.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

I specified http://rrserver:8530 in the GPO options (specified intranet Microsoft update service location), but it is apparently not being carried over into the client settings.
Have you rebooted them?
Try also running the command
wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
on them

on them THE LOG DID NOTE SOME 0x80190194 ERRORS, BUT IT SEEMED TO ADD UPDATES.
I looked at the Survival Guide. Most of it I had tried from other wed searches. I got a bit lost on the proxy issues part.

Checks that every update metadata row in the database has corresponding update files stored in the file system. If update files are missing or have been corrupted, WSUS downloads the update files again.

Sorry to be clueless.
The article you reference about running wsusutil reset
states to place it "at the command line %drive%\Program Files\Update Services\Tools>". How do I bring that command line up?

By looking at your reg query results your gpo is misconfigured

I thought I followed the Microsoft instructions for configuring it. Can you tell me how I can narrow the problem down or where I should be looking?
I would start by looking at the "specify intranet....." And make sure both are identical and include ":8530" at the end
ASKER
I have those settings as you suggest already.
As I noted at my first post, it seems that my settings are not being properly distributed to the clients. And I do not understand why the WUServer setting changes to reserver:8530 with the gpupdate /force but doesn't stay there and returns to WUA after a minute or two, as noted by the ClientDiag.

Sounds like you have another gpo applying the wrong settings, run rsop.msc to determine

By the way, I do appreciate your assistance.

I placed the WSUS GPO domain link on "enforced" and re-ran ClientDiag. This time it held the rrserver:8530 and the AU Option of "4". But the WUServer still reverted to WUA after about 30 seconds.
ASKER
What is "WUServer = WUA" telling me?
ASKER
I found the the SBS Domain Password Policy GPO had WSUS settings in it. I deactivated those. All four client computers are still not connecting, but both servers are connecting fine. The only computer GPO not on the servers but on the clients is SBS Windows Firewall. The only GPOs not on the clients but on the servers are SBS Auditing Policy and Default Domain Controllers Policy.
As before, when I gpupdate /force on a client computer, I get a good ClientDiag for about one minute before it reverts to WUA.
Where should I be looking now?

"What is "WUServer = WUA" telling me? "
This is telling you what you have configured in one of your GPO's for "Specify intranet..."
Have you rebooted the client PC's ??

Try this to narrow down the affecting GPO
open command prompt
type:
gpresults /v>>results.txt <<hit enter
results.txt <<hit enter
search the results.txt(CTRL+F) for wuserver
that should tell you which GPO has "WUA"

ASKER
The solution was obtained from another blog. The individual helping me in that blog was able to help me narrow the problem down and identify the issue. My post explained the answer that we found through that process.
Then you *MUST* also specify this within your GPO's too
WUServer = http://rrserver
WUStatusServer = http://rrserver
These should read
WUServer = http://rrserver:8530
WUStatusServer = http://rrserver:8530
