Building new print server causing issues with printing before I even configure users to print from the new server

We have a Windows 2003 printer server that has worked fine for years. I recently built a Windows 2008r2 server and started configuring the same printers on that server with the same IP addresses assuming I could let the server sit for a week or so before we start using it. I was adding printers one by one to the new server and downloading all the proper 64 and 32 bit drivers and testing printing from a Windows 7 64 bit workstation and an XP 32 bit workstation. All of a sudden a handful of users, but not all of them, starting having print issues intermittently. Some could no long communicate with their printer configuations they had used for years even before I actually started hooking live users up to the new server. Could something in the new server be interfering with the old server? I thought you could have mulitple print servers pointing to the same printer??? The majority of users are fine and it is business as usual. Does anyone have any input? This is a windows 2008 forrest level domain
