Cant rename user profile folder in windows 7

I am trying to create a new roaming profile for one of my domain users. They are having an issue with Outlook which appears to be profile related.

I then let the system create a new profile when I log in the next time. Then I copy any files that I need to from the old (redundant profile) into the newly created profile folder.

When I have I do this process with XP machines I first rename the locally held copy of the profile on the users PC to username.old.

When I try to do this in Windows 7 it keeps saying that I cant because the folder is in use.

I have tried taking ownership of the folder and I have also tried stopping the explorer process and then attempted to rename the folder using dos.

None of this worked and I still cant rename the folder.

Any suggestions?

Can you boot into Safe Mode and try it?

EDIT: Ah sorry, didn't realise you'd posted basically the same thing.

I'm working on the PC remotely so no I cant do that right now.
It might be a silly question, but have you restarted it?  And can you?
Yes I have rebooted several times.

Process Explorer shows that the processes that are using files contained within the users profile folder is the actual remote support tool I am using, logmein rescue!!
Are you able to access the computer remotely in any other way?  Ideally Remote Desktop?

Otherwise maybe something like join.me?
Try disabling the Indexing service and see if that solves the
problem (Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services,
double click on Indexing and click on the Stop button)
I have rdp onto the pc and have managed to rename the pcs local copy of the folder to username.old. I have also renamed the server copy of the profile to username.old.

Now when I log into the PC it is using a temp profile. It does create a new profile folder on the server which the user in question has ownership, but this profile folder is completely empty.

Why is this happening?

Thanks guys. I used process explorer to find what process was locking the files. Turned out to be logmein then used rdp to access machine and following that deleted the reg key mentioned in mikev2's final post.
