ipad apps

I just purchased an IPAD and it's supposed to be the 3rd generation with wifi and 3g.  What's the difference between the 2nd generation and the upcoming 4th generation.  Lastly, how can I make sure I purchased the 3rd generation as opposed to any other model.  I paid $450 for a brand new one and I'm a bit confused if it was a "good" deal or not.

Lastly, what are some of the better apps everyone is downloading out there.  I have a soon to be 5 year old that knows more that I do about this thing.  I wanted to install some learning apps for him, but not sure what they could be.  Can someone help in this arena.  Not that it matters much, but he's a BOY.

First question: 2nd, 3rd & 4th generation reefers to the frequency the devices operate on; 4th one being the fastest.

Second question: If you are in the US & Canada area [iPad 3] you will be able to utilize the latest 4G network if not then you might not be able to. Good deal if you reside in US - No advantage if you are somewhere else. The are nice features though like SIRI [iOS 6] that you would not find on iPad 2.

Best to browse together in app store and find what he likes.

Although I did find some APPS that are free, within the apple directory, once downloaded ran, it seems as though I still need to purchase additional software or products.  Is there a way around purchasing these "things".  I'm more interested in e-books and educational material for a 5 year old.
You would be able to get free content if you jailbreak it.

Is it running iOS 5 or iOS6?

The nice part about jailbreaking iOS 5 is you get to save the 'blobs' this helps if you happen to update to iOS 6 and run into bugs and you want to downgrade.

Whereas if you update and you do not have the blobs saved, then you cannot revert back.
How do I verify which iOS I presently have?
Settings, General, About and look for version.
Are there any instructions on how to do the jailbreak?
