exchange server 2003, first storage and recovery storage groups

Hello,

We are having an issue with exchange 2003 storage group mounting so I recovered a backup to the recovery storage group and mounted it without an issue.

I have been poking around for a while and saw that I should use exmerge. I downloaded the program and try using it, but then I get a permissions issue when I select the restore group and try to proceed (from what I understand the user running the program cannot be part of the admin group).

So.... I then create a new user called "exmerge" but the user is not allowed to log on locally! If I add exmerge to the admin group he can log on but i get the same issue as above. Does anyone have a solution to this?

Is there another way to fix my problem without using exmerge or can you please point me in the right direction to get exmerge to work?

Many thanks!

Usually you would run exmerge from another machine with the system tools installed. Those doing this frequently would often have a machine for this purpose. Often an XP machine, with IIS and the Exchange management tools only installed. Don't forget to patch the tools to the latest version (SP2 plus updates).

The permissions that the exmerge needs though are also in Exchange. At the minimum it will need Exchange View Only permissions which is in the Delegate Control menu at the top of the tree in ESM.

So to sum up:
1. Grant the Exchange View Only permissions in ESM.
2. Setup a workstation (a VM would do the job) with the tools installed.

Simon.
More importantly, ExMerge account needs Send as and Receive As permission on the store you would want to use it for.

Because it needs rights to access the mailbox for you and retrieve data from it, without this basic permission - ExMerge won't help you at all.

@exchange geek. I mentioned it in the first sentence.

No worries...
@jcapiro: You didn't understand my question - the EE thread was all about Exmerge - the solution that you've written talks about issues mounting a mailbox store.
