Backup Exec 2010 R3 question

Hi,

I have 2 x ESXi physical boxes and 4 VM's running on each.  For backing up Symantec's Backup Exec 2012 was chosen however i downgraded this to 2010 R3 due to so many complaints etc.

Within Backup Exec i have purchased the Virtual Server Agent Licences and installed this remote agent on all 8 VM's (all Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise). For the best part the backups's are working well until it find's a SQL database which exists on 3 of the VM's due to various applications being run.It then warns me to buy a SQL Agent licence as i am using the granular backup method.

Question is, do i need to use the granular method at all?  What benefit does it provide exactely?

Cheers.

You will need to install the SQL Agent license to use the GRT feature for your VM backups which would allow you to restore individual SQL items like databases etc. without having to restore the entire VM.

Please refer to the following article and the related articles within for more information.

A backup of virtual machine using Backup Exec 2010 generates an exception in the backup job log - "You must install the Agent for Microsoft SQL Server on the media server to configure the granular recovery of SQL data or truncate the SQL logs."

ASKER

Ah so if i wanted to restore the entire VM i simply turn off the granular feature and away i go.

Bloody Symantec, charge you for this, charge you for that.
