"Current disk layout will be deleted" message when connecting SAN iSCSI storage to VMware Hypervisor 5.0

Hi,

I'm trying to connect a datastore that's sitting on an Equallogic disk array to a VMware Hypervisor 5.0 host. That datastore is being used by another ESX guest at the moment but I was told that it can be accessed simultaneously by two different guest machines.
Everything was going well until it came to adding storage in the host. I receive a message that the current disk layout will be deleted, see the attached screenshot.
I did some search around an some forums suggest that the VMFS datastore is being recognized as a snapshot.
Can anyone advise how to find a way around this issue?

Regards

you do not need to use the Add Storage function in ESXi, that's a bit confusing if the storage has already been prepared for ESXi usage.

Just ensure that the datastore/LUN has been presented to the new ESXi server, and select Storage Adaptors, and click Rescan Storage, and the datastore should appear, with its name, like on the other ESXi server. (that's clearly already been done, because you can detect the LUN/volume).

Just Click Re-scan Storage

Thanks for your comments guys. I'm a bit confused now. Can I or can I not share that partition between to guests?
You will need a microsoft cluster to share this partition between two computers.

And you need to attach the partition directly to the vm using Raw Device Mapping Disk.

Most certainly yes.

We have multiple Equalogic LUNs connected to ESXi servers.

Yes, if it's an iSCSI LUN with VMFS between ESXi servers - yes.

What happens when you select Rescan Storage?

does the datastore appear?

I kind of appears...
Let me explain. On my first attempt to connect the partition I was threatend by the host with the "Current disk layout will be deleted" message. As there was some free space (50GB) on the partition left there was another option to add storage of that free space. So I went for that one. When I do Rescan Storage only those 50GB appear as a datastore. The rest (1TB) is not displayed.
Please see some additional screenshots.

As I told you before the NTFS partition cannot be mounted by an ESXi. Natural partition for ESXi are VMFS partitions type.

Only a VM (probably windows) with be able to mount this partition with by adding a raw device (alowing the vm to have direct access to partition through iSCSI).

But i would do that if the partition is already mounted by a vm in you old esx.

NTFS cannot be managed by multiples hosts hosts unless you configure a cluster.

A bit more ...

You have now on your EqualLogic volume 2 partitions :

a NTFS one (not mountable by esx)
and a VMFS one who is mountable by esx

ok. I think I've got my answer now. Do you guys mind if I split the points equally?
nope ...
