HP Laserjet 4L manual + config

A client has bought an old LaserJet 4L but it's missing the top feeder and coming up with error "TRAY 1 LOAD PLAIN LETTER" on its display when trying to print to it with XP.

afaics (i can't find the manual) the printer has 3 trays, and it numbers the top feeder as Tray 1. I tried to configure it (with the inbuilt XP driver) such that it ignores all but one of the trays, but without success. So

a. how can i fix this?
b. where is the manual?

Thanks for that. Not sure if it will help with tray config yet though
Have you tried resetting the printer to factory default?  Also have you tried a different tray in the tray 1 slot location?  Can you see if there is any blockage that may be preventing a sensor from detecting the tray?
Found this while trying to Google up a user guide

Written for Word but sounds vaguely in the right area.

Thanks, i'll give these suggestions a try. It could be some time before i get back to the printer though.
Tray 1 is the manual tray. If none of the other trays are configured to the required paper ( in this case size letter, type plain) then it will ask you to load it in the manual tray.

So joed, can i 'disable' the manual tray?
You can put plain letter in one of the other trays and make sure the tray setting are set plain letter and then it should printer from the other tray.

OK. What's confusing is that i associate 'letter' as a paper size. It's a size that's not really seen here -we use A4

page 3-17 &3-18 to enter service mode and set the cold reset paper size to A4 if it is set to letter.
Sounds promising. Forgive me if i don't come back for quite some time as it will be some time before i get back to the hardware. It might never happenm in which case i'll allocate points and close 'blind'
